Kenmore 300 series softener fills more than it drains. I left it on brine cycle for 6-7 hours and it ALMOST got all the water out of the tank (it was only half full)

I saw a mention of being unable to drain water out of the pipe and I must say water can be sucked out of a vertical pipe from the top with a Shop Vac. Not sure if this helps.
