Why not encapsulate the big long coil springs in a metal or a strong plastic(ABS ??). When the springs breaks, its then contained..
Also, the spring should be oiled , I have seen too much rust on...

4" metal galvanized piping......much better than 3" PVC (which was 99% clogged.)

I do not think that the 3" white plastic(PVC) drain pipe is OK for a dryer exhaust, I discovered that it was clogged and then knocked off, so I guess the dryer was then vented to the crawl space...
