I was looking at the amps, which seem to jive with a 1/6HP motor.

Yeah, I have that wiring diagram. Its the ONLY diagram I have. No C diagram that you mention and it's all factory.

I think my problem was the fact that I did not have a brown wire...

I just pulled the fan motor off and lo and behold, there is a wire diagram just for the fan.
The blue and red wires are for low and med speed.
I think the reason the fan ran slow when it did run is...

While I go and buy a new motor, what I was trying to figure out and apparently failed to do correctly, is how to wire the 6 wires coming off the fan.

multistage aux heat coils?

I have what appears to be 4 heating coils for Aux heat on 2 different levels.
Meaning 2 coils on top of each other forming a stack, and I have 4 stacks.

Is this considered multistage aux heating?...

Aux heat comig on while HP is in Defrost mode

Normal operation for HP's have the aux heat come on (in my case, electric heating elements) when the unit goes into defrost mode.
