Unhappy thread snarling on backtack

Hi all-
I'm sewing heavy nylon webbing, using thick upholstery thread and a size 16 needle (making dog leashes). When I try to backtack a few stitches at the start, my machine throws a hissy fit and gives me a nasty snarl of thread on the underside of the webbing. Fiddling with the tension doesn't seem to help. I'm using the largest stitch size. Any ideas?

A few things come to mind.
One, are you starting to sew down a little way from the edge? If you start to sew right at the beginning, this can happen.
Two, have you tried a larger size needle? Size 16 may be too small for what you're sewing and the kind of thread you're using. I'd use at least an 18 and preferably a 20 or 22.
What machine are you using? Can your machine handle this?
