I recently got a New Home MyExcel23L sewing machine from a friend who didn't want to pay to have it fixed. There is no manual, and I can't get one as they are out of print. The machine sews forward, but when you depress the reverse lever it will not sew in reverse to lock the stitch. It just continues to sew forward. Any thoughts on what is causing this not to work? I'd like to try to fix it myself, I'm pretty mechanically inclined.

Hi Sosinska and welcome to the forum!
Has it been oiled at all? If not, or you don't know, then it probably needs oiling, then run it a few minutes to try and loosen it up. Also if it hasn't been oiled, it may be stuck and gummy, so you may have to take the cover off or the bottom off (I"m not familiar with that machine) and blow a hair dryer in there to loosen it.
Try that for starters.
