I have a cheap plastic Brother 2500. What a joke. I use it to patch denim, thin and thick. Thats it. I played around with darning using the plastic plate and breaking 3 needles. I saw that I should get a darning foot with the ring on the end. I was darning with no foot and it was rough. Thank God for Alenes fabric glue. That stuff is great. Anyway seeing as how I only do patching and simple stuff and dont care about perfect looking sewing...should I just leave the machine in darning mode with the darning foot and go with that???? Why do I need the feed dogs anyway???

A lot of people keep machines to do just one thing. If you do other sewing, you'd need another machine for regular stuff. So, if that's all you do is darn, I'd say, why not leave it to just darn. The feed dogs are needed to do regular sewing to move the fabric along. It does drop when you need it to darn or free sew,
