selection/installation wood flooring

Folks:

Just bought a new home, thinking about replacing three rooms of carpet with engineered wood. Subfloor is particle board, total SF = 455. Looking at the prices (about $4-5/SF) on the net it will run about $1900 for the material. (Lowe's and others sell by the square yard, comes to about $1600.) Never installed flooring before, will find the labor.
I notice some precautions about particle board subfloooring, so I wonder what might be the best material to go over this, or other methods (lay down plywood?) to fix that should it be necessary>

Installing engineered floor

The approach you take will depend on what type of product you by and the manufacturer's recommendations for subfloor and installation method. The floating, interlocking engineered wood floors are popular because of ease of installation and you can float them over particleboard.
