Question Removing Black Tar Paper

My house was built in the early 1930's and we are trying to remove the floor tile in the kitchen which was laid some time in the 50's. Underneath are several layers of black tar paper over the original hardwood floors (which we want to refininsh). Any suggestions on the easiest way to remove the black tar paper??

The black tar you are referring to is a common adhesive that was used to adhere the vinyl or tile to the sub floor. the paper you are referring to is more than likely the backing from the vinyl or tile. I would recomend useing a floor scraper to remove as much of the paper as you can and then you might try a remover for the glue itself.
