Unhappy hardwood floor repair

4 weeks ago we had our oak floors stained to a fairly dark color (medium brown/ebony). Our furniture was moved in and there are numerous scratches on the floor. They are not deep, but some run a few feet long and give a shiny appearance when looking at it from a distance.

Is there anything which can be done to the scratchesother than buffing and recoating? My local hardware store recommended fine steel wool but I am not completely sold on the idea.

Thanks,
De

How many coats of finish were put on the floor. What sheen? gloss, semi-gloss, satin Steel wool will sometimes work on satin oilbase finish but dulls gloss and semi-gloss. On a 4 week old floor you will see a difference in the unsteelwooled and steelwooled parts of floor unless you buff the whole floor the same.

There were three coats of polyurethane over the stain, and the finish is a satin sheen. The sratches are very shallow- I believe it was made by my daughters toy bus she ran over the floor.

Any suggestions as to a quick fix? Would using the steel wool look less conspicuous than the sratches?

Thanks for your help!

You can try a fine steelwool by hand and see how it looks. If it doesn't have the same look then you can use a buffer with a steelwool pad and do the whole floor.
