After the hardwood floor is put down, what to put on top of it??

I'd put a long, rubber-backed (that soft non-slip kind) carpeted runner in front of the sink/dishwasher and a similar, shorter one in front of the French door which gets the most use. IME, and we are in the kitchen alot, very few accidents happen at the refer and stove and we're rarely standing there for long periods, where a softer surface might be nice. IMO, a balance must be struck between protecting the hardwood and leaving it exposed so one can enjoy its beauty. The only runner we really wear out is the one in front of the sink/dishwasher. That gets replaced every year or two.
Glad to hear you're keeping the hardwood....good luck with the project!
