finish

I want to refinish my beuatiful oak floors, that have been covered with carpet for the last 50 years. I have two dogs that I am worrried about scratching with their nails as they walk around. I have one estimate from are finisher/installer for $2.25/sq ft, but I think I will do it myself. He recommended the finish he uses - Synteco from Sweden. I am guessing it is water based since he said he would be able to get three coats on in one day.

1. I am leaning toward an oil based product, because I believe they are harder. Does anyone have any suggestions?

2. Also, I have about 850 sq ft on the main floor and would like to do it all, but cant tackle that much at on time. Is it easy to blend in if I did it in three sections?

thanks alot

I recomend that you use either Lenmar, Duraseal, or Varathane becuase of the pets. Yes you can do it in three sections but you will need to be carefull about overlapping the poly. Pay attention when you feather into the next room so you don't get a ridge from room to room. Good luck with your project.

You can find varathane at lowes for $39/gal. What i would suggest is you go to a hardwood flooring store and explore the options they have. For 850sqft you will need Aprx 5 gals of finish for three coats. Lenmar in my area is 74.50/5gal and Duraseal is $99.99/5gal. Have fun and if you need more help e-mail me.
