Removingcarpet - wood is tacky

I will be removing the carpeting in my living room and dining room this weekend. There are very nice red oak floors underneath
The problem is the foam padding has left the floors very tacky/sticky. What can I use to clean them. I have TSP - would that be too harsh?

Thanks!

Susan

I doubt that TSP will work. You will need some type of solvent to remove the gummed up rubber backing. I would try mineral spirits first, as that will not harm any finish which may remain on the flooring. However, It is not likely that you will be able to get by without completely refinishing the floor, so whatever solvent (mineral spirits, acetone, benzine,MEK) that disolves the goo would be the one to go with using proper ventilation.
