Nobody talks finish brands

there seems to be a constant debate over oil or water based poly but nothing is said about brand names. Are they all the same or do some "shine" while others suck? Everywhere you go you see the standard bearer MINWAX but what about the others? I just bought gallon of Olympic oil based poly.

Scott,

I've used a number of different brands, not for floors but for various furniture pieces.
Minwax, Flecto, Parks, McCluskeys, etc, are all about equal. I haven't seen any significant differences.
Maybe a floor refinisher has noticed, but I'd say it's a preference thing more than anything.

We don't talk brands, because it could be said we are a puppet for the company.

All finishes work. Some better then others.

We are loyal to our brands, but we don't receive any sponsorship(money or free stuff) for advertising for them.

Saying don't use a brand, can get you a nice letter of intent(legal)

Yeah but if there were some real dogs out there it'd be nice to know. That's what forums are about...

but so far in this case it looks like I shouldn't worry

Well, I will talk brands.

If I have a gripe or experience about a bad brand, you'll hear it.
For example, the Parent company of Minwax, (which I like), makes the worst deck sealer around - Thompson's Water seal.
There I said it.

Put the polys are all fairly equal.

uh oh Fred. This could easily turn ugly. Boycotts. Recalls. REVOLTS!!. DoItYourself.com could easily turn into the postwar Baghdad of web forums! Let it be known to don our flak vests before posting!

There are many differences between polys. Most are ease of use. The suttle dif are in the amount of solids each comp puts in for hardness. You will find sheen vary slightly from man to man. We have tried them all and work with what we find suits our needs best. Are there some out there i would not recomend yes. The trouble is we buy our poly and supplies from flooring dist not big box and hardware stores.
