Hello/Intro & ques about hardwood floors
Hello! I just registered today, and boy am I glad to find a forum like this one! By day, I teach handicapped high school students, but on the weekends, I'm trying to fix up my house. The garden is doing well, the dogs are happy, and life is good.
The house used to belong to a woman who did childcare in the home, and we, not having money to restore the flooring (which was in sad shape), DID have money for carpeting, so we had the house carpeted.
After 20 years of carpeting, we recently removed the carpet from our 12' x 12' bedroom.
The hardwood floor is in sad shape for easy refinishing. There are paint drops all over, and lots of small gouges, plus the nail holes from the carpet and padding, where the installers kinda went nuts with the nail and staple gun!
Additionally, there are numerous black circular stains from where the woman had potted plants that she watered--the plant containers must have sat directly on the wooden floor.
Structurally, I think it's in good shape. Cosmetically, it's terrible, and I think refinishing it (specifically, dealing with those darn black stains!) would be more than I want to do.
Is it possible to just lay another hardwood floor over this floor? Any advice would be welcome! I'm not excatly handy, but I'm not exactly all-thumbs either.
Smiles,
Sooz

Yes it is possible to lay new floor over old but it is better to remove and install. Do you know how thick the existing flooring is?
Don't rule out refinishing. The only thing that will ned to be replaced if the floor is thick enough would be the boards effected by the stains if they do not come out during the sanding process. Go to my web site and look under repairs. what you think is unsalvageable might not be.

Hi, Phil,
Thanks for the reply! (I was beginning to wonder about the number of viewings versus the number of replies! LOL)
I'm re-thinking the floor problem. I have no idea how thick the original hardwood is, but I've decided to get some estimates for refinishing. I'm sure it's not the worst floor anyone has ever seen, right? (g)
