I'm doing a fairly large room with first grade maple and the maple is very uniform in color. Because of this I was considering adding a stencil, most likely a star pattern, to the middle of the room to add some character.

I found some limited info on this, I know that you paint this over the first coat of poly with acylic paint, but is this something a DIY'er can do?

Where do you get the stencils - art supply stores?

The info about stenciling on this site is for stains which is not applicable to me.

There is an illustrated article on stenciling in the November 2003 issue of Reader's Digest "The Family Handyman" magazine that just came out.
Good luck!
