Laminate on ledge

We are looking at installing laminate flooring on concreate slab subfloor. The dining room section drops 3 inches into the sunken living room. How do we install glueless laminate over the ledge - it measures 10 feet 11 inches with a 90 angle to a 3 foot section. There is also another section of ledge from the kitchen/hallway that measure 4 feet with a obtuse angle to a 5 inch section.

Do you plan to use the same laminate on both levels, I am guessing that each full room is a separate level. I am also guessing that the vertical face of the curb or ledge is the item of interest. Please also share a brand name for suggestions on the accessory items that you will need.

My husband wants to put carpet in the sunken-in part, though I would rather have the laminate flooring. We don't have a brand picked out yet... we want to make sure we can do this any suggestions on that?). There are plenty of instructions for stairs/steps, but none for a large 'step' like this. Would you just install the ledge like you would stairs?

The simple solution is if you carpet the lower level you can carpet the face of the curb and cap the carpet and the end of the laminate above with square nose or reducer molding.

If you use laminate on both levels, you can apply laminate to the face of the curb. Is then curb height more than 7-1/2"? I suspect not but that is a very important question. Will the planks run parallel to the curb or perpendicular to it? Another very important question. The plank ends should face the primary light source in the room and this may influence the answer to the plank direction question above.

The project can be completed in all laminate or laminate on one level and carpet on the other. How the project is completed, remains a question.

the curb is only 3.5 inches and we were expecting that the laminate would run parallel. I'm not sure what you mean by 'the plank ends should face the primary light source....

Planks can be "ripped" to fit the 3-1/2" dimension. No problem here that I can see. Would you plan to have the installed by a pro or do you plan a DIY installation?

The primary light issue is one that limits joint exposure. End joints are staggered and narrow while the long joints are neither. The joits that face the primary light source are the most noticable.

I was hoping we could DIY... but we may try to find a local pro to help with the ledge part! It might also be worth while to get someone to help us with the planning and prep.
