Replacing carpet with oak stair treads

We are attempting to replace 2 carpeted stairs with oak treads. We bought the treads and have stained and done the poly on them. Now its getting time to install the steps. We plan to use 1/4" plywood for the riser. Question is does the riser go on first or the tread? Also what is the best method of nailing the tread so that they are on tight. My son was thinking of using screws then filling the hole with a dowel peg. I'm not sure if i'm going to like the way that looks. Any hints or help with this is greatly appreciated.

put the tread on first then the riser.You can use finish nails and construction adheasive to help fasten the tread

Unleveled/Tilted floor.

Hi All, I recently purchased a Condo/Townhouse as a first time home buyer. After a few days into moving in, I realized that floor is unleveled / slanted all the way. This can be seen only when we placed furnitures or applicances on the floor and on all rooms. which was not a very comforting feeling. Has anybody seen this before? Adding baseboards over...

We are having wood floors put in our home right now. They didn't pull up the baseboards however. Our baseboards weren't extremely tall anyway and I have a feeling that after they add the shoe molding they are going to look pretty short. I was wondering if there are baseboards out there that you can actually put over your old ones. i.e. the top of ours that is left is pretty small. Maybe there is something that is beveled out on the inside so it would fit over the old? I don't know..... Thanks! Craig L.Read More
