Question What type polyurethane finish?

My site finished oak hardwoods have oil based stain & poly finish on them. I want to do a "pad & recoat" but am getting conflicting information about the new finish. Different "pros" are telling me that I MUST use an oil based product. However, one of them claims that there is a water borne product that could be used. I don't know who to believe. Please help.

Use an oil based!

Compatibility issues are too great with using a waterbased over oil.

Take some motor oil and wipe it on a piece of any old scrap wood laying around. Next day drip water on it, where you applied the oil. What happens?

What type poly?

Thank you for the prompt response. There is so much work in this town for anyone connected with the housing or decorating field, that there are a lot of people claiming to be "professionals". All that seems to mean is that they have set themselves up in business. It doesn't mean that they have years of expertise in their field. I will take your advice.
