Hardwood Flooring Splines

Hello,

I have read that you can purchase a slip tongue or spline and glue it into the groove to reverse the direction of hardwood flooring. No one seems to sell splines in my area. Do they exist or do I need to rip my own on the tablesaw? If so, what material do you recommend for making the splines - sacrifice a few hardwood planks?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Don, if you have a flooring distributer or wholesaler in your area they will stock splines. The ones in my town will sell sundries to the general public like transitions, splines, cleaners, ect.

If that don't work you can make them yourself. Take 2 boards and butt them together groove to groove to see what size they need to be. Use a few boards that have blemishes. A feather board helps alot when ripping splines. Just be careful with them fingers and wear safety glasses!!

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for your quick response.

I have purchased Northern Classics Lauzon Birch flooring and none of the distributors of this hardwood in my area carry the splines - all have told me to make my own. I will try to call the manfacturer in Quebec this afternoon and see if they even make splines.

Will post the results.

Hello again,

I called Lauzon (ie. hardwood flooring manufacturer) today and they do not make splines for their hardwood flooring.

If I can find a flooring distributor in my area who sells splines, then, I would like to know it the splines generic (ie. one type fits all manufacturer's hardwood floors) or does one need to order a specific size to fit a given manufacturer's hardwood?

Thanks in advance for your repsonse,

Don

Don, I should have mentioned that splines are generic. The last pack I bought were about 1/16" too wide and I had to rip them anyway. If you locate them take a couple pieces of flooring with you and check the fit before you buy them.

They are really not that hard to make yourself if it comes down to it.

Jerry,

I think I will make my own from scrap pieces of hardwood. I have a good quality splitter on the table saw which will hold the thin stock very securely against the fence.

Thank you for your advice!

Don
