Splintering hardwood floors.....
Hello,
Red Oak hardwood floor from 1915, recently sanded/refinished in 2003 is splintering in some areas (mostly occuring where boards butt together). Is there an alternative method to repair this damage or maybe even bonding the wood splinters down to avoid totally refinishing the floor again?

If the floor has been around since 1915, it sounds like it's had it's share of refinishing. If it is a tongue and groove floor, it sounds like what may have happened is the top of the groove has been sanded thin and has no substance left. If there is a way to look at the end grain to see how thick the upper half of the groove is it may have hope for refinishing. I don't know of a bonding agent that would help hold the splintering in check without ruining the hardwood effect. An acrylic finish is an option but an expensive one and it doesn't do the hardwood justice. It may be time for a new floor covering.
