polyurethane scratches easily
I've noticed that the poly coats on my hardwood floors scratch very easily. The bulk of the scratches are very light, and can only been seen close up and with good lighting. There are a few deeper scratches which can be seen from greater distances. The resisdence is adult only, and I don't believe there is any excessive abuse to the floors. So I'm quite surprised to see any the scratches when I clean the floors.
Is it expected that the poly will develop many light scratches, is it low grade poly, or perhaps it was not applied properly? Or maybe it is time to invest in some runners?
Thanks.

Applying too thick of finish coats can cause a finish to be soft and scratch easier then normal with more thin coats.
This happens when a contractor is in a hurry. they feel 2 thick coats will get the same amout on the floor and be much quicker then 3 or 4 thin coats, which will be more resistant to scratching, as it is a harder finish once cured.
