Question

I have an old farm house. The stairs leading to the upper story squeak terribly. I am a carpenter and wood floor sander, but no where have I found hints on squelching the squeaks! I could top-screw them but !

Cool

Pre-drilling and top screwing will help some, but the best way is to secure small wood wedges between treads and risers and stringers from underneath, IF you can get underneath. There are probably other ways, but that's the only way I've used. Good Luck!

Cool

As a carpenter you are probably familiar with trim screws that are available with quite small square drive heads. If you get some of these, you might be able to pry squeaky parts apart enough to get some glue into the cracks and then hold them down with the screws in pre-drilled holes. This only of course if you can't get to the underside of the stairs as OG suggests.
