installing laminate floors
#1

we are putting laminate floor over existing vinyl. what prep should be done to ensure level floor? I'm worried that any dips will be to large for the plastic sheeting that goes down first. Any suggestions? Kathy

Most stores that sell laminate flooring also sell the foam backing material designed for this type of flooring. It not only helps fill in small gaps, but also eliminates a "hollow" sound associated with a floating floor.
If the dips are really bad, I'd install a thin layer of plywood over the existing floor to level it out. Make sure to seal any joints and screw heads before you lay the laminate on top.

I just thought of another tip when it comes to installing laminate flooring. Always run the boards either 45 or 90 degrees to any light source. If you're installing the floor in a dining room with a patio door off it, make sure you run the boards 45 or 90 to the patio door. This way, the joints will be less noticable.
