Can 3/4 inch hardwood be installed directly over a kitchen vinyl floor? Should we still use building paper over it before installing?
Thanks, Tracy

I'm not an expert on hardwood floors, but I have torn out a few for various reasons. More than one of them had vinyl underlayment.

So my guess is that this will work, and without the need for felt.

Thumbs up

As long as the existing floor is in reasonably good shape, there's no reason not to go directly over it. However, if the floor is uneven, you'll end up with a squeaky hardwood floor. This results because the hardwood moves. If in doubt, I would simply put down a layer of thin plywood first, sealing all the screw heads and joints between the boards. This will give you a solid surface to start and will provide a much better finished product.
