Want to install floating floor but have linoleum floor in kitchen which is 1/4 inch higher than other room. What type of underlayment should be put in "lower" room to obtain same level as kitchen? Thought about plywood, but what grade? Should it be glued? Is a vapor barrier required? Crawl space is below sub-floor, but already has visqueen layed on top of sand. Should linoleum be torn off kitchen floor? Any comments appreciated.

Dilbert, 1/4" plywood is fine. Don't worry about getting finished plywood, since the laminte will span over any knot holes. Staple or nail the plywood.

As long as the vinyl is down tight and you don't have to plane the subfloor, you can leave it down. Be aware that if the vinyl was installed in the late 70's, early 80's, or before it may have asbestos in it. As long as you don't sand or saw the vinyl it's not a health issue, but you don't want the ****'s....er....I mean EPA to catch you removing asbestos $$$$$!!!!!!
