Question

Is it practical for a couple of people to attempt refinishing hardwood floors if they've never done it before? In process of buying an old home in need of much work, including re-doing the floors, but for financial reasons need to do as much work as possible ourselves. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Yes, you can do it yourself. There are do it yourself books available. If you can't afford one, go to the library. Or, you can go to Lowe's or your favorite homecenter that has such books and stand and read the chapters on wood floor refinishing. You will need to have a drum sander, sanding paper, scrapers, etc. You will need to know how to operate equipment. You will need to know how to clean surfaces after sanding. Then you will need to know the differences in the qualities of available polyurethane available. Do not put down fewer than 3 coats. 1st to seal wood, second to coat, and 3rd as a wear layer.
