Alternatives to refinishing?

My wife and I just bought our new (first) home with beautiful 2 1/4" white oak floors. The current finish has a little bit of life in it. I poured a teaspoon of water onto the floor by the front door, and after a minute it soaked in a little and left a dark spot that soon disappeared. However, I fear that our 2 year old son who is prone to spilling juice would soon wreak damage on these 75 year old floors.

I want to preserve the aged character of these floors, and down want to sand and refinish. What other options do we have? The home inspector said we could put down a stripper and then roll on a new coat of poly, but I'm not familiar with the process or what are good brands to use.

Any advice is welcome.

As old as they are, they may have the old waxed finish on them and just need a good waxing and buffing???

It does sound like it is past time for a screen and recoat if they are urethane finished.
