I just bought 750 sq, ft. of Formica brand laminate flooring. It was a steal of a deal from a local supplier at $0.25/sq. ft. Thought we would be paying in the area of $1,500.00 plus for the same materials at other stores. However, my question is this. Does anybody have experience in assembling this particular brand of laminate flooring? Other laminate flooring that I have set in the past has a typical T&G at each narrow end of the strips. This is not the case with the Formica brand, On the tongue end, it has a bevel on the upper edge with a 1/4" drop and groove that needs to somehow fit into a reverse design on the groove end. Is there a special technique for assembling this or am I just missing something? Is it simply a matter of doing our best to line it up at the ends and tapping (hammering) the board to fit from the opposite end? Seems difficult at best. (Maybe that's why it appears that Formica is getting out of the laminate flooring business, even though I think it is a good product and a better than good price.) One other thing. The style of the pattern is ceramic tile in 12" x 48" boards. I assume that since the pattern is wannabe tile that it is not necessary to stagger the end joints, correct? The snap style fit also seems to belie this fact. I could be wrong and am looking for additional input. Also, since I have four (4) dobermans that have run of the house, does it make sense to waterproof the seams with glue? They some times have a tendency to see the door and not make it to the door on time if you catch my drift. I want to do this once and not have to worry about cupping or delamination of the materials once they are down due to a problem with moisture impregnation, even from mopping the floors. I have had various suggestions from a number of people and some say yes, some say no. I would appreciate some input, as I want to do this right the first time. I know this topic has been hashed out many times, just looking for a little clearification. Starting a new project, laminate throughout many rooms of the house. I've never layed wood flooring before but would like to attempt it myself. The one room that has me stumped has existing parquet flooring glued to concrete. I've read and understand that the existing floor has to come off before laying the laminate or I'm just asking for trouble. The question and concern I have is in regards to the glue that will be left behind once the wood is removed. Just how clean do I have to get the concrete slab? It sounds like an awfully big task consisting of hours of work to clean it completely. If that is the case, do you have any recommendations for a tool to help remove it? I'd like to stay away from chemicals if possible. Thanks guys.
