Laminate flooring and kitchen cabinets....

Is it ok to install kitchen cabinets directly over the laminate flooring or should the kitchen cabinets be installed first with the laminate flooring being trimmed out around them?

Most laminate floor companys recommend you install your cabinets before you install your laminate floor then trim the laminate floor around the cabinets. However, they say also if you want to install the flooring first you must not nail the cabinets to the flooring itself but to the wall studs.

Filled heavy cabinets sitting opposite each other pose a problem when sitting on the laminate. If they are only along one wall and expansion is on the opposite wall without a heavy appliance, it will be OK as long as no mounting fasteners are place through the laminate.

Don't ever try to do that. Base cabinets are always fastened to the wall studs. But in order to level everything, wedge shims are used underneath the cabinets so the doors won't rack when the cabinets are loaded.

Wedge shims underneath a heavily loaded base cabinet will lock the floor down even without fasteners in the flooring.
