hardwood refinishing

I've got a hardwood floor with numerous pet urine stains, which I'm sure will require a good amount of sanding. Any tips for a first-time refinisher? Should I attempt to bleach the stains if they persist after sanding?

Pet stains that have settled deep into hardwood flooring most often cannot be removed by sanding and/or bleaching. Options include staining the floor a darker color in attempt to camouflage the stains or replacing boards with boards from inconspicuous area. Many refinishers will not take a job where pet stains are involved because sanding activates the breath-taking ammonia in urine.

DriCore subfloor and laminate...any thoughts?

Just finished putting down 500 sq feet of the DriCore subflooring system for my basement. It took me a solid eight hours...first time user of the system, went down fairly easy..so far, I would say it is a quality product (IMO). The basement is dry, (New England location) I wanted to get off the cold floor, and didn't want to go the carpet route for a have hardwood throughout the house. I plan on using a floating laminate floor...probably Pergo (casula living series) with the underlayment attached. Curious if anyone has any experience with using DriCore and a laminate? Supposedly I shouldn't have to include a vapor barrier for the DriCore panels come with one: "The high density polyethylene moisture barrier bonded to the underside of DRIcore subfloor panels is molded with dual wall cleats that are durable and act as a raised moisture barrier. Independent lab tests confirmed that the DRIcore polyethylene moisture barrier does not support the growth of mold. " The panels due indeed fit nice and tight with one another with really no seams at all to speak of, so I assume the VB is relatively contiguous and I don't need one for the laminate. My next biggest question(concern) relates to how much "bounce" is allowed in the laminate. Like any raised subfloor, it's an unbelievable challlenge to get the floor level...even with the DriCore and using their leveling spacers. When I walk on the panels you can feel a bounce here and there due to highs and lows. I've read all the threads on having to have the subfloor meet the laminate flooring spec's....I am curious though what is reality...as a DIY'r, what can I expect, will the laminate work? Has anyone gone the Dricore with laminate route? Many thanks.Read More

Hardwood around granite fireplace hearth

I have been struggling with the issue of wood expansion issues throughout the process of flooring our home. But now I'm in the home stretch with one final matter. At issue is expansion around relatively small imoveable objects such as a fireplace hearth. I am puzzled because in one of the few books about flooring (Dan Bollinger's) he shows a stone hearth being framed right up to the stone with oak. I have a 14" x 60" granite slab beveled to 3/4" thickness in front of our fireplace. Because it is beveled to this thickness it would NOT look great to put end cap expansion arount it since it would end up higher than the granite bevel. A siliconed gap of say 1/4" wouldn't look as bad as I had imagined... but I'm still not thrilled. Otherwise it is a matter of framing the slab right up to the granite with oak (as does Bollinger-a supposed expert). I'm using prefinished stuff. The frame would be groove "out" so that the tongue of the floorbards perpendicular to it would slip in neatly. Is there a problem with this? Could expansion around such a small object cause heaving or disfigurement in the flooring around it? What is the opinion out there from you who are in the flooring business? Thanks! Bob W.Read More
