beautiful hardwoods

I've finished sanding down my hardwood floor - I believe it's white oak - and am ready to make it beautiful. Is it necessary to both stain AND seal with polyurethane? Or is there a product that does both? I don't want to go too dark or too glossy...just a light amber look.

Also, any way to lighten pet stains before finishing? The sanding didn't remove them.

Tinted finish is not as durable as staining then finishing. You can go natural without a stain, but I would suggest a universal sealer.
