Painting Hardwood

I'm remodeling (gutting) a house I just purchased, to include having a custom kitchen built. The kitchen will be kind of a country style (best way I can describe it), antique looking pine cupboards, painted with milk paint, etc.

I'm installing a wide plank untreated pine floor this weekend. I'd like to paint the floors so they appear antiquey/rustic and then seal them so they can take kitchen traffic abuse. Everyone I've spoken to says painting them is nuts, but I think if I can make it look like I envision it will add to the overall kitchen appeal.

Anyone have any experience with this? Any advice as to what type of materials to use for best results.

Thanks,

Treat it just like regular sand and finish. The only difference is the finish coats have color pigment instead of being clear.
