Refinishing old hardwood to match new hardwood?

In our house we have hardwood that runs from the main entrance, around a kitchen and to the dining room. Then in the dining room and living room there is old carpet I want to replace with hardwood. I know if I replace the carpet with new hardwood, it won't match the older hardwood on the rest of the floor, but could the old hardwood be sanded and restained to match the new hardwood? Or another option I guess would be to lay new hardwood down and then sand and refinish the whole floor, both new and old hardwood to match. Would that work?

Any help is appreciated.

Installing unfinished wood and sanding and refinishing all areas at the same time will tend to give you a better match.
