Laminate to carpeting w/o molding.

I am cutting out a rectangle of carpeting in front of my corner fireplace and putting in laminate flooring. i want the carpeting to come up to the flooring without the aid of molding or a saddle. How do I pull this off without the carpet fraying or coming up?

Z-bar metal and tackstrip. It will give the edge a roll and tuck look, without any transition.

The bad part about that, if the laminate installation is any bigger then what you want to do, a transition molding to maintain expansion gap is needed.
