Good shim for joists?

I need to shim up some joists to bring them up to equal height with adjacent joists. I already have the subfloor up so I figure shimming the joists where necessary would be easier than double+ laying 15# roofing felt where the dips would occur.

Can I use roofing felt as a shim for a joist, or is it too soft/compressible? What material would be ideal?

Just guessing, but roofing felt is probably no thicker than 1/16"-1/32". Are you planning on stacking the felt to get the required thickness? Anything less than a 1/16" I wouldn't worry about. Anything more, I would rip a shim from a 2X4".
