Can a vapor barrier be a problem?

I am about to install engineered hardwood flooring over an existing hardwood floor, which is on proper underlayment and over a dry basement. The store people tell me that I should just use red roofing paper - that all I need is some sound barrier and not a vapor barrier.

Is this correct? Would a vapor barrier be a potential problem if I laid one anyway?

Thanks.
