Oak floor in Herringbone pattern follow-up

thanks for the previous responses.

We were in the middle of prepping the floors for a stone tile installation when my daughter changed her mind so now we're putting down 3/4" red oak flooring in a Herringbone pattern. We're using unfinished planks to match the adjoiining rooms which will all be professionally stained and finished.

1. We put down an add'l layer of plywood with 1/4" spacing between the boards and screws every 6-8". Do these need to be filled in as with the prep for stone tiling? If so do we still use a thinset or equivalent?

2. Since we are both glueing and nailing the strips, does some type of sealer or bonding agent need to be applied to the plywood?

3. What's the best glue to use for this application?

4. We are thinking about putting down an inlaid border. I assume that the floor finisher tapes off the surface of the inlay so that the stain doesnt cover. Is there gereally any "bleeding" of stain onto the inlay?

Thanks again

No, the gaps will be fine,

The only reason to use glue and nails is for wide plank Urethane glue from a caulking gun type tube. Not regular `ol Liquid Nails, either. Urethane.

PL Urethane, Bostiks, in a tube, Liquid Nails Urethane.

You can do it with stain, but most of the time it is done with a contrasting species of wood Maple with mahogany border.
