Cork Expansion Strips

Hi

I'm about to start laying my first wood flooring but I'm a bit confused.
I know you have to leave an expansion gap and have read the manufactureers instructions on leaving the gap. However a friend has told me before covering the gap with the moulding I should fill the gap with cork expansion strips. Is this true as no where in the fitting instructions does it mention this.

I wouldn't go through the time or expense, if your covering it with molding. It is used against things that don't get trim.

Wood floor install parallel to floor joists?

I'm checking out installing some "real wood" flooring in hall through kitchen. Those I've seen at big box stores from Bruce and Armstrong etc... have varying instruction on installing these products parallel to floor joists. I have to do so to make it look right. In general, how much of an issue is this for this type of flooring; that is, are manufacturers covering their butts legally when practically it is not an issue for most installs? Any suggestions as to which is better to use in this situation: a glue down versus a staple down or floating system? I'm trying to use something like a 3/8" thick or so real wood product so that I can lessen issues related to raising floor height with a 3/4" or so product. TIA, BobRead More

Dirty scratches, heated floor

I just moved into an apartment with an area of horrendous scratches on the light colored wood floor that may have absorbed a lot of dirt. What can I do to make this area look better? I should mention that I'm currently in Korea so the apartment has ondol heating (hot water pipes under the floor heat the room) so if the solution requires putting a substance on it, I'm guessing it shouldn't be heat sensitive.
