Installing laminant hardwoods over carpet padding?

I have laminated floors that Im going to install, and I was wondering if I could just put them right on top of the carpet padding the old carpet was installed on. Is this too much padding? Should I get some sort of laminant padding instead?

Do not put it over carpet padding!!!

You may need a moisture barrier, and cushion. Some laminates have the cushion attached to the planks. Over concrete, you need a moisture barrier, over wood, it is not recommended.

Read and follow manufacturer's instructions for subfloor prep, underlayment, acclimation, and installation. Installing any floor covering over carpet is a recipe for disaster and voids warranties.

The joints that hold the laminate pieces together don't like to flex. That's why there's a flatness tolerance that must be adhered to. Carpet pad is too thick and soft for laminate. It will allow the joints to flex too much and I've seen them actually disintegrate and turn to powder.
