hole cut through hardwood floor...

we just bought a 1950's california home and the previous owner cut holes straight through the hardwood and sub flooring to accommodate an old heating unit. what would it take to repair it and what is a reasonable estimate to have a professional do it? thanks.

The easiest would be to drill the holes out to the next dowel size and glue in dowel pieces of the same wood species. If done properly, it wil barely be noticeable.

they are fairly large holes roughly 6 inch by 8 inch rectangles.

Pergo "global passage" reviews?

Just picked up 200 sq/ft of pergo global passage 5inch laminate, african paudauk color. It was $3.00 sq/ft, minus a 40 cent rebate, and 10% for opening the lowes card. I love the color and is just what I was looking for, an individual 5" inch plank with beveled edges. Does anyone have any reviews on this product? Install, buckling, scratching, etc? Can i put a dab of glue between planks? it seems to go together to easy! Also, this has a pre attached underlayment, over slab. Should I attach plywood, to the slab, or just go right over the slab? If i go right over the slab, I plan on using tar paper since I have about 2 rolls left over from another job.. Finally, floor in the rest of the house is about 1/4" higher than the floor in this room, because of built up, black mastic used when the original parquet was glued down. When I get around to ripping up the old parquett, will the 1/4" difference between the different laminates be a problem? Thanks!Read More

I am looking at installing laminate flooring in some areas that meet with a brick wall (for fireplace) and carpet so I wanted to understand how to handle the required gap. I have searched these forums and done some reading. Here are my options: 1. Undercut the brick wall. I don't think I can handle the difficulty so I rule it out. 2. Quarter round glued to brick wall. I don't like the idea but seems most cost effective and my wife doesn't mind it. 3. T-Molding. Just like the doors, I am thinking about installing the track next to the fireplace and putting a T-molding flush with the wall allowing floor to slide underneath (this is my own idea). 4. Endcap molding. I looked at the Lowes 4-in-1 molding pack and they do address the problem with an "endcap" molding but they tell you not to install the track and put it down with some silicone caulk or something. I could not open the package so I don't exactly know how this works. 5. Custom molding. I don't know where, I don't know how, so I am ruling it out. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions to weigh in favor of one or the other approach? As far as carpet is concerned, it is at the same level as the laminate, so I am thinking about T-Molding there too. Thanks in advance.Read More
