gaps and holes in wood floors

i have gaps and cracks in the wood floor all around the house - how do I fix it?
How do i fill the gaps & holes?
There was carpet all over the house and it was removed before we bought the house. There are staple marks and i am still removing the staples all around.
There is a lot of dirt and dust that collects in between the cracks of the wood joints and nail/staple holes.
How can i fix my floor?
Thanks in advance for your help

Remove all staples, fill holes, run shop vacuum to remove all dirt in gaps. Sand, vacuum again, and refinish. It is not recommended that gaps between boards be filled because wood expands and contracts and filler eventually gets forced out and looks unsightly.

Go to www.nofma.org for the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association's technical manual on finishing wood floors. Click Publications and download for free.
