Old carpet pad sticking to hardwood floor

I just removed a carpet that was over hardwood floor. I got the carpet & tacks up but the pad was disintegrating and the only way it would come up is with a putty knife. It was like glue or gum, not brittle. Now there is a residue covering the floor, very tacky. What is the best way to take it off?

Mineral spirits, a scraper, lots of elbow grease and good ventilation. Not fun, but it will come off.

I sanded right over the gunked on carpet pad. I am not sure if you are refinishing the floor though.
