Red face making a hole filler to match

I am refinishing a old red oak floor about 11x13ft. Some nitwit (not me) face nailed a section about 2x3ft. I've remove the nails and need to fill the holes. I am aware of putty options. But, it has been suggested to me that I could mix the floor "sandings" with little polyurethane and the resulting mixture I could use as a hole filler that would match the floor.

Anyone have any thoughts on this idea?

Any recommendations for a tried and true method to fill holes in red oak? THANKS

I've heard of mixing sawdust with a little wood glue for holes, but never polyurethane.
