8mm or 12 mm laminate?

What are the advantages of 12mm vs 8mm laminate flooring?
The floor will be installed in an old house (circa 1830).
Is it better to use laminate with attached underlayment or laminate without attached underlayment and purchase a quality separate underlayment.
Any suggestions on a quality underlayment other than cork? Thanks.

Thicker the better...

I personally would stay with a laminate that does not have the foam underlayment already attached. With these types of floors, you still have to put a vapor barrier down anyways.

They make decent 3 in 1 type underlayments. Stop by a flooring speciality store or big box. They all should have these.
