Splitting Tongues

I've just started pnuematically stapling my first row of 3/4 Brasilian Cherry. I'm using 2 inch, 16 gauge staples. Each staple is splitting the tongue, between 1 and 2 inches from each staple, though the tongue is staying intact. This is also not preventing me from properly seating the next row.

Is this normal? Should I switch to a 15.5 gauge staple?

Thanks.

Back off the pressure. If that doesn't work, play with shims to angle the fastener differentl. If that doesn't work, try a cleat nailer.
