Hardwood Refinishing

I recently bought a home in Colorado with very neat hardwood flooring, it's 6 inch wide planks of oak ( I think) with knot holes and all...very rustic.
however, the previous owner had a dog that scratched the heck out of it.

Is this a homeowner job or should I hire someone?? scared of the cost...probably won't get done.

Thanks guys,

-Dave

Full blown sanding/staining/sealing in Colorado (Fort Collins) is running around $2.75/sq. ft. But - you probably just need a light sanding and recoating, which should run considerably less. It is not out of the realm of a DIYer for this job - to lightly sand the top coat to take out the scratches - followed by a couple of coats of poly.

Is the wood scratched or just the finish?

If the just the finish is scratched, it shouldn't be too hard of a diy project but if there are grooves in the wood, it will need a heavy sanding and a drum sander can be tricky for a novice to use correctly.
