Welcome to the DoItYourself.com forums and congrats on your new home

Not the pro around here, but I'm sure someone will post something.

When you say it's in bad shape...what exactly do you mean? It just needs to be spruced up? Not "bad shape" as it needs to replaced right?

Tell us about this flooring.

Wood species, width of boards, inlays?

Is it deeply gouged, broken, or just dull? What kind of "bad shape" exactly?

Does the floor appear wavy? In that case it's been heavily sanded, maybe so much we can't sand again. You can learn a lot about the flooring by prying up a heat register, etc. and looking at the profile of the boards.

Probably you'll end up renting a floor sander or polisher, or paying someone to.
