Adhesive and padding removal from hardwood

Hello,

My kitchen had a laminate (or vinyl?) flooring that was placed on plywood - i guess this would be called a sub-floor?

Well, that floor as it turns out was placed above hardwood.

So I have removed this subfloor and I am now finding myself with more staples on the hardwood that I can count and also some sort of greyish/black pad that is stuck on the hardwood by adhesive.

How do I remove the adhesive and indirectly remove whatever this padding may be?

Am I also making sense?

A good floor scraper would do fine.

Regarding the staples:

Either yank them out, nail them back in, or maybe the scraper can get them out depending on gauge.
