Pine wood floor questions

I have a wood floor, pretty sure it's pine, in real bad shape, rented a belt or drum sander (the heavy duty one) and got it in pretty good shape, put the "golden oak" stain on as I was instructed,...

A couple of questions,...one you can see the "sit down" marks made by the belt sander, they are faint but I can see them and the color is darker than I wanted it and now it looks like oak,...can the marks be lightly sanded to help remove them? and could I lightly sand the whole floor with fine paper and lighten it up a little or will the urathane do that? And how may coats of urathane?

Thanks

Using a drum sander is tough...as you found. You might be able to rent a large random orbit or oscillating sander...but I think you would have to go over the whole thing again. Spot sanding will make it real tough to get the stain right.

Most recommend 3 coats of poly...2 of gloss then 1 of whatever you want the final look to be. Semi-gloss or even satin.

You ain't kidding!...

Would going over it with a orbital with like 100 help or am I wasting my time?

Is it best to sand in between coats of poly?

Unless I'm mistaken, an orbital sander is always used for the final sanding prior to stain/finish. A light sanding/buffing is done in between coats of poly. Oil base poly will make the floor/stain darker. Waterbased poly doesn't affect the stain color any..... but it doesn't wear as a good as oil base poly.

As Vic said, you can't just spot sand and restain. I'd suggest resanding the whole floor and then restaining. If you think it might be ok without more stain, wipe the floor down with a rag, damp with paint thinner. While the paint thinner is still wet - that's approximately how the floor will look with poly applied.
