1/2 inch Plywood

Currently for my subfloor I have 1/2 inch Plywood and 1/2 inch Particleboard on top of it. Can I get rid of the Particleboard and install 3/8 inch solid hardwood instead? Does this give me enough strength or should I replace the Particleboard with another half inch Plywood?

Why I can't just install the wood floor perpendicular to the joints line? I though this will give enough support so I can avoid the two layer subfloor which can cause some issues?

The " plywood as a single layer, is not tongue & grooved, that is why the overlay of particleboard, spanning the edges of the plywood. 3/8 is not stout enough. 33/32 wood would be stout enough.
